libguestfs is a set of tools for accessing and modifying virtual machine (VM) disk images. You can use this for viewing and editing files inside guests, scripting changes to VMs, monitoring disk used/free statistics, creating guests, P2V, V2V, performing backups, cloning VMs, building VMs, formatting disks, resizing disks, and much more.

Bochs is a highly portable IA-32 (x86) PC emulator written in C++. It includes emulation of the Intel x86 CPU, common I/O devices, and a custom BIOS. Bochs can be compiled to emulate many different x86 CPUs, from early 386 to the most recent x86-64 Intel and AMD processors. Bochs is capable of running most operating systems inside the emulation including GNU/Linux, DOS or Microsoft Windows.

This is a Vagrant plugin that adds a Libvirt provider to Vagrant, allowing Vagrant to control and provision machines via the Libvirt toolkit.

Ganeti is a virtual machine management tool built on top of existing virtualization technologies such as Xen or KVM. Ganeti controls:

• Disk creation management;

• Operating system installation for instances (in co-operation with OS-specific install scripts); and

• Startup, shutdown, and failover between physical systems.

Ganeti is designed to facilitate cluster management of virtual servers and to provide fast and simple recovery after physical failures, using commodity hardware.

The virt-manager application is a desktop user interface for managing virtual machines through libvirt. It primarily targets KVM VMs, but also manages Xen and LXC (Linux containers). It presents a summary view of running domains, their live performance and resource utilization statistics.

Incus is a modern, secure and powerful system container and virtual machine manager.

It provides a unified experience for running and managing full Linux systems inside containers or virtual machines. Incus supports images for a large number of Linux distributions (official Ubuntu images and images provided by the community) and is built around a very powerful, yet pretty simple, REST API. Incus scales from one instance on a single machine to a cluster in a full data center rack, making it suitable for running workloads both for development and in production.

Libvirt is a C toolkit to interact with the virtualization capabilities of recent versions of Linux. The library aims at providing long term stable C API initially for the Xen paravirtualization but should be able to integrate other virtualization mechanisms if needed.

Python-vagrant is a Python module that provides a thin wrapper around the vagrant command line executable, allowing programmatic control of Vagrant virtual machines.

TurboVNC is a high-speed version of VNC derived from TightVNC, with which it remains compatible. It contains a variant of Tight encoding that is tuned to maximize performance for image-intensive applications (such as VirtualGL, video applications, and image editors) while still providing excellent performance for other types of applications. Some of its unique features are:

• a user-facing vncserver command;

• the ability to capture keyboard keys even when not in full screen mode;

• a full screen mode that is compatible with ratpoison*

*Although due to a quirk in Java, you'll want to set the _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING environment variable when using it with ratpoison.

NeatVNC is a lightweight VNC server library, supporting authentication, SSH tunneling, and ZRLE or Tight encoding.

x11vnc allows one to view and interact with real remote X displays (i.e. a display corresponding to a physical monitor, keyboard, and mouse) with any VNC viewer.

This is a VNC server for wlroots-based Wayland compositors. It attaches to a running Wayland session, creates virtual input devices, and exposes a single display via the RFB protocol. The Wayland session may be a headless one, so it is also possible to run wayvnc without a physical display attached.

Bitmask, by LEAP, is an application to provide easy and secure encrypted communication with a VPN. It allows you to select from a variety of trusted service provider all from one app. Current providers include Riseup Networks and The Calyx Institute, where the former is default.

StrongSwan is an IPsec implementation originally based upon the FreeS/WAN project. It contains support for IKEv1, IKEv2, MOBIKE, IPv6, NAT-T and more.

vpnc is a VPN client compatible with Cisco's EasyVPN equipment. It supports IPSec (ESP) with Mode Configuration and Xauth. It supports only shared-secret IPSec authentication with Xauth, AES (256, 192, 128), 3DES, 1DES, MD5, SHA1, DH1/2/5 and IP tunneling. It runs entirely in userspace. Only "Universal TUN/TAP device driver support" is needed in the kernel.

The GNU Virtual Private Ethernet creates a virtual network with multiple nodes using a variety of transport protocols. It works by creating encrypted host-to-host tunnels between multiple endpoints.

n2n is a light VPN software which makes it easy to create virtual networks bypassing intermediate firewalls.

OpenConnect is a client for Cisco's AnyConnect SSL VPN, which is supported by the ASA5500 Series, by IOS 12.4(9)T or later on Cisco SR500, 870, 880, 1800, 2800, 3800, 7200 Series and Cisco 7301 Routers, and probably others.

sshuttle creates an encrypted virtual private network (VPN) connection to any remote server to which you have secure shell (SSH) access. The only requirement is a suitable version of Python on the server; administrative privileges are required only on the client. Unlike most VPNs, sshuttle forwards entire sessions, not packets, using kernel transparent proxying. This makes it faster and more reliable than SSH's own tunneling and port forwarding features. It can forward both TCP and UDP traffic, including DNS domain name queries.
