Chocolate Doom takes a different approach to other source ports. Its aim is to accurately reproduce the experience of playing Vanilla Doom. It is a conservative, historically accurate Doom source port, which is compatible with the thousands of mods and levels that were made before the Doom source code was released. The Freedoom project aims to create a complete free content first person shooter game. Freedoom by itself is just the raw material for a game: it must be paired with a compatible game engine (such as prboom-plus) to be played. Freedoom complements the Doom engine with free levels, artwork, sound effects and music to make a completely free game.

The original Colossal Cave Adventure from 1976 was the origin of all text adventures, dungeon-crawl (computer) games, and computer-hosted roleplaying games. This is a forward port of the last version released by Crowther & Woods, its original authors, in 1995. It has been known as ``adventure 2.5'' and ``430-point adventure''.
